Based in South Africa, Hennie Meyer is a highly acclaimed ceramic artist collected all around the world. Working predominantly in earthenware, he creates highly individual pieces and particularly enjoys the challenge of making composite shapes, experimenting continually with the expressive qualities of clay and glaze. His use of strong form balanced by highly detailed surface decoration has created what is now his recognisable and unique signature style.

About Hennie Meyer

Hennie has studied ceramics in Australia and South Africa, drawing inspiration from both continents. He exhibits extensively, and his work has been included in numerous permanent collections and international publications. It received an honorable mention at the Third World Ceramic Biennale in Korea in 2005, and in October 2006 he was one of a select group of just ten ceramicists invited to exhibit at the International Master Teapot Makers exhibition in Shanghai, China – a rare accolade from the nation that invented the art of tea drinking. This year sees him exhibiting for the third year running at the prestigious Ceramic Art London Show at the Royal College of Art, as well as the Shanghai City Gallery as part of the celebrations for the Chinese Year of the Pig.

About Mustardseed & Moonshine

Kate began the company in 1992 in a modest studio in the suburbs of Capetown and since these humble beginnings the Mustardseed & Moonshine brand has grown to become one the real artistic success stories of South Africa.

The botanical range of crockery is recognized internationally for the delicacy of its design, its botanical correctness and its complete functionality, and is now stocked by some of the finest retailers in the world, from New York to London, Paris and Milan.

Kate’s inspiration for her designs began at the tender age of ten.Her father accepted a scholarship at Harvard University and subsequently moved with his family for a year. While there, Kate discovered the Harvard Museum and became transfixed by one particular exhibit, The Harvard Glass Flowers. This relatively unknown work is by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka(1887-1936) features an incredible display of over 3000 blown glass flowers. This startling exhibit was the artistic starting point for her future botanical creations.

Kate's began her career in advertising, taking a graduate position for an agency in Cape Town. It was through this that she was 'discovered' after offering the use of her house for a photo-shoot by a magazine. Her ceramic flowers were featured and after unprecedented interest she began to take orders.

Kate then decided to take the plunge and in 1992 she became a full time ceramic artist. The final piece of the jigsaw came shortly afterwards as the company was named Mustardseed & Moonshine after two of the sprites in Kate’s favourite Shakespeare play “A Midsummer Nights Dream”.

Mustardseed & Moonshine now employs over 40 full time artists, many of whom have been trained through an apprentice scheme that Kate created to offer skills to the inhabitants of nearby townships. These trained artists are responsible for the handcrafting of the clay to create both the delicacy and the botanical features of the pieces. The incredible attention to detail ensures that all the flower shapes feature the correct number of petals and all pieces are hand-painted to create a beautiful intensity of colours. The firing process is essential to the character of the pieces with the earthenware baked to a high temperature to offer a combination of elasticity and strength.

Undoubtedly exquisite and uniquely delicate the Mustardseed & Moonshine range is designed to be completely functional and can even be used quite safely in ovens, microwaves and dishwashers.
